I was super exited to find this app recently!
It’s called “Is It Vegan?” and can be used to scan products or search for an ingredient or product to find out if it is vegan or vegetarian. How cool is that!
I’m sure anyone out there who has tried to cut out animal products from their diet can relate to the problem of spending ages reading through ingredient lists at the supermarket while quickly trying to Google crazy named ingredients that are hard enough to pronounce, never mind figure out what they are.
Could the “Is It Vegan?” app solve this problem? I put it to the test.
To start with I grabbed a few items from around my house, Heinz Tomato Soup which I know is not vegan and a packet of Nairns Fine Milled Oatcakes which I believe are vegan, and scanned them with the app.
Just as I thought, it showed that the soup is vegetarian but not vegan and displayed a list of ingredients which are suitable for vegetarians and the ones which are suitable for vegans. Very handy! The oatcakes proved to be definitely vegan and the app showed a list of the vegan ingredients.
If you come across a product that the app doesn’t recognise, it has a very useful feature which allows you to take a picture of the product name and a picture of the ingredients and send it off to the developers to be added to their database.
So, what if you don’t have a bar code to scan? Or just want to look up an ingredient? No problem, you can do that too! I tried it out with one of my favourite beers, Coors Light, to see that yup, it’s vegan!
You can even share the results on social media!
The main downside for me is that it has ads all over it which really get in the way. I have the free version so I might just upgrade to the ad free one which currently costs £2.99 from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Not much really for something so useful.
You can find more information about the app on it’s website by clicking here or pop over to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to download the free or paid versions.
